Games I Wanna Play — Hakuoki: Demon Of The Fleeting Blossom (PSP)

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than to have your choice of hot men (thanks, Aksys Games!)?

Oh, Aksys Games. You bring me such joy. You give me games like the Guilty Gear series. And BlazBlue. And Agarest War. And now you bring me something else to gush over.

Hot, steamy men.

I wouldn't mind having him covering my rear (yea, I went there).

Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom takes place near the end of Japan’s Edo period. A young lady named Chizuru Yukimara goes to Kyoto looking for her missing father and stumbles upon a group known as the Shinsengumi, the strapping young lads responsible for protecting the innocent folks in town. Coincidentally, they’re looking for Chizuru’s dad too, so they decided to take it upon themselves to taking her under their wing and protect her.

Sounds like pretty standard stuff, yea? So what kind of game is this?

It’s an otome game (a game marketed for girls where one of the goals is to form a relationship with one of the male protagonists), and a visual novel.

… Hey, don’t run away! Get back here! GRRRR~!

Our plucky heroine, Chizuru, won't stand by and let injustice and unchivalrous behaviour go unpunished.

For those unfamiliar with visual novels, think of those “Choose Your Own Adventure”-type of books (did I just age myself?), where you would read up to a certain point and must make a choice on what to do next by going to the page indicated. If you choose right, your story continues,  but if you made the wrong choice… well, you’ll get “The End” staring up at you in big, bold letters. Visual Novels work in a similar fashion (of course, you get to see the action… it is “visual” after all).

Naturally you’ll expect to have lots of characters, story arcs, twists, and other fun facts to keep track of. Fortunately, Hakuoki has an Encyclopedia that keeps track of all the people and events you encounter, as well as a Record of Service feature which enables you to review all the things that happened in any given chapter, so if you stop playing for a couple of weeks and start again, you can get up to speed.

But who cares about all that!? I wanna get to the MEN!

Ya know, after spending more time with your bodyguards, encountering mortal danger together, yadda, yadda, yadda, you start to develop… feelings. Warm fuzzy feelings. “Let’s get it on” feelings…

hakuoki demon of the fleeting blossom: embarass

Don't ya hate when that happens? You're talking to a hot guy, then you find yourself draped on top of him; staring deeply into his eyes; wanting to touch his well-defined pectorals? Happens to me all the time (>_>)

On the flipside, our pretty boys (and many other characters, for that matter) drink this substance called the Water of Life, which gives them über power… but it makes them, for lack of a better way of putting this, bat shit crazy vampire-like creatures.

The choices you make not only affect how the story unfolds, but affect the relationships you form with your studly crew. You’ll be able to check the Romance Level and Corruption Level of each of the fellas, so you know who to flirt with (or put a restraining order on if they’ve been drinking too much of that Wowie Sauce). Based on the choices you make and the relationships you have, you’ll get one of several different endings.

... I think we should cut Okita off from that Water of Life. Just sayin'...
