The Last Guardian Getting Some Extra Muscle

The Last Guardian

The game needs some help… who you gonna call?

Team ICO’s third game, The Last Guardian, was announced back in 2009. Since that announcement, the game has made some progress… and then kept on hitting speed bumps. Doesn’t help matters when the game’s producer Yoshifusa Hayama left Sony last year to develop social games, and the mastermind behind the game, Fumito Ueda, is now working on it as a contractor.

So what does one do to ensure that a game such as this even makes it out the door? Ya get help. Lots of it.

The Bat Signal was lit, and a number of Sony’s Western teams are answering the call (such as the famed Sony Santa Monica).

“We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios,” Sony Game Design Chief  Shuhei Yoshida told Wired in a recent interview. “We have a central tech group in the U.S. and the UK so we are giving [Team ICO] whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the U.S. and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice.”

So with all this extra help, can we expect to see The Last Guardian sometime soon? Ummm…

“At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past,” Yoshida continues. “But now it’s making progress, but still not to the level — it’s playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch.”

So it looks like we’ll have to play more of the Waiting Game. But ya know what? I’m glad that Sony’s going to such lengths to get this game finished. Hopefully with the extra man power to help smooth out all the technical issues and whatnot, Team ICO will be able to create the masterpiece they set out to make. Anyhoo, maybe Sony’ll have a better idea of how things stand by E3 in June (and maybe a release date?).

Speaking of Sony Santa Monica… I wonder if the winner of The Tester will help out with The Last Guardian?
