You can actually watch the Super Smash Bros. Invitational in the flesh… if you’re lucky.
The competitive Smash scene has been around for quite sometime, but it really blew up in recent years, with major eSports league Major League Gaming picking up Super Smash Bros. Melee for their MLG pro gaming circuits back in 2004 (it was dropped in 2007 due to lack of interest, but it’s coming back this June), and the biggest fighting game tourney, Evolution Championship Series, adding Melee to its 2013 lineup (not without some hiccups), as well as this year’s event.
Nintendo seems to have contracted the Competitive Gaming League Bug, and announced a few weeks ago that they’ll host a Super Smash Bros. Wii U Invitational at this year’s E3, where 16 of the top Smash players will duke it out. Best thing about this tourney is that you can go watch it in person.
All you have to do is line up at the Nokia Plaza at LA Live on Tuesday, June 10th at 9:30 a.m. PT to pick up a wristband (and don’t even bother trying to camp out for nights on end — that’s a no-no). There are only 3,000 wristbands available, and you need one to get in. If you get all dolled up and cosplay as your favourite Smash character, you may get preferential seating, with the action beginning at 4 p.m.
The Invitational is going to be streamed on both Nintendo’s Twitch.TV channel and Twitch.TV’s E3 channel, so those of us who must remain homebound won’t miss anything (unless, of course, you have to work and can’t watch Twitch for whatever reason).
I think it’s cool that Ninty’s letting the fans come in and watch, and are getting into the eSports groove 😛
Would you guys consider going to watch the Invitational in-person? If so, would you cosplay, (and as who)? Let me know in the Comments Section!
